IT’S NOT RIGHT

Lyrics and music by Roger Coghill

Verse 1

So many things aren’t right. So many things

Are telling me it’s never going to work.

He’s far too old. He’s from another land.

The colour of his skin is far too dark.

He told me that he loved me more than life

And didn’t care how much the world derides.

But desperately he sank beneath the waves

Drowned by convention’s ocean tides.

Chorus

His skin is dark and mine is fair

It’s there in black and white.

But folks that see the difference

Keep saying it’s not right.

Verse2

“But he’s not right for you”, my mother said

“The world’s your oyster”, clichés call.

“So many smoother pebbles on life’s beach

Why choose this jagged jetsam from them all?”

I only know he made my darkness bright

And every cell that lives within my frame

Resounds with joy the moment he was near.

And no one else will ever do the same.

Chorus

His skin is dark and mine is fair

It’s there in black and white.

But folks that see the difference

Keep saying it’s not right.

Verse 3

And yet now that he’s not there, the sunlight fades,

And symphonies transpose to tuneless tones

Clouds and cold winds pervade my dreary day:

My rainbows turn to monochromes.

They say “Go choose some other heart to love,

Let stern convention’s wisdom strike you numb”.

So now I’ve killed the dappled love we had

My slate is clean. Now, noisy world, be dumb.

Chorus

His skin is dark and mine is fair

It’s there in black and white.

And folks that see the difference

Keep saying it’s not right.
